A work of bleak grandeur, elemental force and restless transformation, Marrow Of The Spirit marked the beginning of a new chapter in the history of AGALLOCH.

Following the precise, modern production and more song-oriented approach of Ashes Against The Grain, the band deliberately moved in the opposite direction. Clean became dirty. Digital amp simulations gave way to vintage tube equipment. Concise structures opened into vast, cinematic compositions. Where its predecessor began at a measured pace, Marrow Of The Spirit erupted from its quiet cello introduction into the most ferocious blast beats. The intention was clear: to capture what a black metal album recorded in 1970 might have sounded like.

Originally recorded by Steven Wray Lobdell in 2010, the album was approached with the instincts of an old-school experimental recording session. Rather than polishing away every imperfection, the performances were allowed to remain loose, physical and alive.

Yet while the original recording captured the performances and energy the band had envisioned, the mixing process was fraught with difficulties. AGALLOCH had wanted a vintage, organic sound with warmth, depth and analog character, but important details became obscured and parts of the arrangements were lost within the finished mix. Attempts were made to recover some of those elements during mastering, but the band never felt that the final result fully represented the album as they had intended it.

Recordings produced by Markus Stock had always served as references for the kind of depth, atmosphere and cohesion the band wanted to achieve. He was therefore the natural choice when the opportunity arose to return to the original recordings.

Mixed at Klangschmiede Studio E and newly mastered by Gus Elg, this 2026 reissue edition brings the album's original vision closer to the foreground. Stock focused on the emotional impact of the recording and on the way its instruments merge into one enveloping soundscape.

Remixing a record is always delicate, especially when the character of the original has become inseparable from the listener’s first impression. The new mix was therefore completed with great care, preserving the album's rawness, atmosphere and distinctive identity.

AGALLOCH never intended to rewrite the album or erase its history. The aim was simply to underline what had always been there: to uncover performances and details previously buried, strengthen the music’s physical and emotional impact, and bring the sound closer to the ideals the band had pursued in 2010.

Marrow Of The Spirit returns not as a replacement, but as a revelation: the same untamed, cinematic and deeply esoteric album, now heard with renewed depth and force.
